The Annual Yard Sale...Food Sale will start at 9:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at 574 Main Street in Jackman. Lamps, suitcases, pictures, frames, chairs, table, and more goodies! Community Cookout (by donation) runs from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Everyone welcome. Donations of gently used, clean items appreciated. Come see what treasures you can find! Also ~ Museum closes this weekend. Rain Date for Yard Sale and Cookout is Oct. 11 & 12.

Do you have a special photo of wildlife, scenery, or activities in the Jackman-Moose River region that you’d like to show people? From now until January 2, 2015, the Jackman-Moose River Region Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a photo contest for visitors and residents to capture those breathtaking moments, thrilling adventures, and unique scenes that make Jackman and the surrounding areas so intriguing. Participation is free and open to amateurs and professionals alike from age 12 up, so come on up and shoot those shots! Interested visitors may contact the chamber for the Official Rules. Categories are 1) action, 2) animals, and 3) scenery photos. One photo will be judged of special merit. Contest Official Rules can be found on the Jackman Maine Facebook page, Pinterest, and Twitter. Some of the prizes include a 2-night stay, a hoodie, a plane ride, a hat, etc.

Starting at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13th, Moose River cookbook author Kate Krukowski Gooding will be at Bishop’s Store Moose Tagging Station signing cookbooks AND giving away one FREE homemade Moose Salami for each moose tongue donated (and the recipe) and FREE Goats Milk Peanut Butter Fudge for each cookbook purchase. Kate is the author of the Black Fly Stew Series: Wild Maine Recipes, Simple Gourmet Lamb and Wine Pairings, 50 Ways to Eat a Beaver and Free-Range Fish & Lobster cookbooks. An avid tester, Kate continues to test new recipes, hence the need for moose tongues (or any other parts). Moose tongue contributors will be credited in her next cookbook “Cook Local-Spice Global.” She will be there until the Moose Salami and Goats Milk Peanut Butter Fudge runs out.

The JRCA Festival of Trees is a yearly event for the children. Santa lights the trees, then visits for a while before taking off for the North Pole. Fly Fishing Classes 4 Beginners

Beginner Fly Fishing Class ~ takes you through the basics, from setting up your rod to identifying bugs and matching them with the appropriate flies. The emphasis of this class weighs heavily on casting and basic fly fishing knowledge. The first day is spent in the classroom going over a vast array of fly fishing topics: setting up your rod and basic terms, flies and the bugs they represent, casting techniques, lines, leaders etc. Day two is spent on the lawn learning various casting techniques, both in groups and in individual instruction. On day three, participants put all the learning to use. This exciting day on the water will leave you dreaming of the next time you can slip away to your favorite fishing hole and lay a nice dry fly imitation on the water for that willy old brook trout. So whether you have always wanted to learn to fly fish, or you have started to learn and want a jump start, this class is just what you are looking for.

Fly Fishing Classes - Advanced

This class is for the individual who wants to take their game to a new level. Classes start out in the classroom going over topics such as matching the hatch, the stages of various bugs' lives and how they pertains to fly fishing, set-ups and techniques, reading rises, etc. The second day finds participants out and about at the many ponds, rivers, and streams in the area. Learn how to "read" a body of water, find food sources, and discover insects and the artificial flies that imitate them. Participants also learn about rises and what they mean, structure, spring holes and much more. The last day of the class involves putting all the information to use and perfecting these new techniques and set-ups. This is a relaxing day of fishing on pristine ponds and rivers in the area and a good way to test out the newly acquired skills on beautiful native brook trout. In the evening, participants enjoy a hearty meal during the question and answer session. If you want to go to the next level, this class will take you there.
